What Does Video Editing have to do with Dentistry?

Everything for me.

Two weeks ago, I wrapped my first video editing project for a client in a WHILE. And you know what? It was a freaking blast.

A friend of mine needed some video/audio editing and audio mixing and mastering for her course that she’s launching and oh my gosh… we killed it… she made total gold.

But what does video editing have to do with dentistry?

Everything for me.

I’ve been stuck in some ‘imposter syndrome’ lately around my offerings… I don’t have an audio engineering degree or know how to work the table in Mirval Studios… I don’t have a Red Camera and don’t know how to make a feature length film…

WE’VE GOT HIGH STANDARDS OVER HERE, PEOPLE.

So I’ve been focusing on what I do know—what I did learn in school—how my school gave me the foundational skills to build on for any type of visual/audio production.

I love seeing how all these skills are all showing up in my work today… how my business is morphing and changing to be more in alignment with that young woman that moved to DC to commit more to art in 2010 than ever before.

And I’ve been remembering the funny and odd parts about art school and the ‘how’ of acquiring all these skills.

That takes us to the dentistry piece.

I had an amazingly odd professor for video editing.

He was definitely neurodivergent and commuted to DC every week from Baltimore (and MICA) to teach our video classes. He would come in groggy, tired, with a massive coffee and not prepared for our college-aged, art-school-kid bullshit.

But he was a great professor—gave REAL feedback. If he zoned out during your critique because your project was uninteresting… you knew. “Look how long my socks are!” he blurted during one student’s critique.

BUT I used to get so mad and have to leave his class sometimes… missing the lessons and having to reteach myself the skills and software later during class time, while my classmates were working on their projects. Why? Because…

He would use root canal videos ripped from YouTube as demo videos.

In non-art-school language: he would teach us video editing skills by showing us how to edit on the projector using root canal videos.

Like, for real?

YEA. He was a weird dude.

He loved to see us squirm and he was interested in what he was interested in.

AND I had some major dental anxiety from a then recent torturous dentist. I could NOT sit in that room. I would nearly RUN to the bathroom every time the projector came on heading into a full blown panic attack.

And you know what? I learned some other amazing skills through that… self-regulation AND filling the gaps of my education myself. I’m pretty certain I ended that class with a B anyway and made some weird/interesting/funky videos too.

But what I want to offer to you out of ALL of that reminiscing is that I can not only process your audio, but be your support for video as well.

If you or someone you know is launching a course and could use some support to make it THE highest quality possible. I’m your girl.

Book a discovery call today so we can get collaborating on your projects. (It’s like hiring a creative director and a coach all at once).
