What the Media? Which Medium?

With so many ways to create, how do you choose?

Most of us have a chosen medium, that one that feels comfortable and home-y. That process that isn’t quite as challenging or can be put on auto-pilot in our brain a little bit.

But sometimes we just gotta switch it up.

Changing the medium can help us unleash a new creativity.

We can wonder at the same giant questions… but from a different angle, from a different perspective.

We can get out the same message, but in a fresh form that tickles our brains a bit.

A friend asked me the other day… “Because you know so many media, how do you decide which one to work in?” Girl. Who tf knows?!

But really… I’m a process artist, so I feel it out.

I ask the work that’s wanting to be birthed, what makes the most sense? What form do you wish to take?

Sometimes a thought needs to show up in words… it wants to be a poem. It rattles through me and off me in syllable and syntax.

OR I follow the interest in the medium first.

Sometimes I envy someone else’s process, how tactile it is… how manual, how different than what I’m used to. Wondering around contrasts conceptually led me to printmaking. Wondering around light and light painting, trying to crop my world and to learn to have a voice, that led me to photography. Needing to let my emotions flow out of me through gestural arm motion, that led me to abstract painting with the palette knife.

What is the work you’re trying to birth right now? Whether that be a marketing campaign in your business, a group program, or an actual art work (be it conceptual, realistic, or abstract)…

What is it asking of you?

How does it want to take shape in the world?

Being an artist, I always try to remember that the act of creating is a deeply sacred and spiritual act. Whether you’re creating content to inspire connection or creating a sculpture to be displayed at a gallery, it’s all sacred and spiritual work.

You can picture me lighting my candle as I sit down to edit your pods, reminding myself that this is sacred listening. (I really do this!)
