Black lives matter. Because black lives matter. Because black lives matter. There is no room for any other phrasing or asterisks in this current time—It's too dire. Black. Lives. Matter. BLACK. Lives matter.
CHANGE MUST HAPPEN. Our system is broken and it's breaking the bodies and lives of individuals that deserve RIGHTS.
There is no space remaining for individuals to feel like a bystander in this… to feel defensive… to say things about how we’ve tried to right the wrongs in our society. There’s no room for conversation around “reverse racism” or “color blindness.” There is no space for the ways we talk about these things in order to not talk about these things.
We are all guilty. We are all innocent. We are all a part of this machine that has always been built and STILL is built on the backs of blacks and people of color.
An entire demographic… a HUGE demographic in our country does not feel safe… is raised with an intrinsic (and very accurate) belief that they do not own their bodies… with the understanding that someone may take their freedoms and moreso TAKE THEIR BODIES AND LIVES at any time. There is a crisis in this country essentially being put on the back burner while individuals uncomfortable with the issue quilt together their choice words to make them feel better.
…While ANOTHER video of a black man being murdered in the streets by those employed and trained to protect him surfaces…
WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?
The conversation is not polarized. Why do we, as humans, always attempt to polarize and do an us-versus-them dialectic… why do we think we live in a bilateral world when our entire existence is three-dimensional? Our minds, our hearts, our souls are bigger than that.
The issue is not whether you stand with police or whether you stand with Black Lives Matter. There’s a detrimental problem in even calling it an issue! How many people have I known in my life that vote based on the protection of unborn fetus’? HOW MANY OF THESE SAME PEOPLE ARE OUTRAGED AT THE LOSS OF BLACK LIVES WE’RE EXPERIENCING DAILY?! Look at incarceration statistics… look at police shooting statistics… there’s something going on here… and it’s been happening for a long time.
IF PRESERVATION OF LIFE IS A DEEP VALUE TO YOU… YOU MUST CARE ABOUT PRESERVING BLACK LIVES.
Everyone comes from differing backgrounds, differing experiences, and is indoctrinated with different understandings of how this world works and what we’re to do here. However, I think there’s a truth that a great number of us can get behind: killing someone is a big deal; a large number of individuals being killed with a common link like skin color is a big deal…
If you care about widows and orphans, but you aren’t outraged by the treatment of black lives and black bodies in our country today… I can’t get behind it.
There’s no way around it. Perspective and relativity fail to become an excuse in this. If we sat down together over coffee and recounted history together, I’m certain that we’d have major fallouts in the ways we see how things have come to where they are, but even still… there’s no way to deny that systematic killing of individuals because of an underlying but overt white supremacist mindset rampant in our culture is horrifying. You’d probably have a lot of issue with a lot of those words… but it’s what I think is happening… and not just me… and not just millenials… it’s what a lot of people see is happening.
I use the words ‘white supremacy’ for a reason: without white supremacy, the word ‘racism’ wouldn’t exist, but we can’t bring ourselves to utter the former and the latter has become a lot more comfortable.
I could go on and on…(because I care, because I read… because I believe it’s important (and mandated, if you’re of the Christian persuasion) to care for people… to love people… to right wrongs and to fight on behalf of those experiencing oppression), but what I really want to say here is:
Church, if you have been mandated by God to love your brother, to care for one another, to right wrongs and to care for the oppressed, to care for the widows and orphans, to cheat the systems on behalf of those in need… STAND UP. SPEAK OUT. There is no innocent bystander in this: if we want change, we must demand it.
The God I worship cares deeply for every created thing. EVERY CREATED THING. Every human is His heart’s desire. Every soul is His treasure and prize. I am not treasured by God if Terrence Crutcher was not delighted-in by the Most Holy of Holies.
I believe in a redemptive hermeneutic… a life-preserving hermeneutic. I believe my God is in the business of giving, maintaining, and preserving life. I believe He calls us into union with Him in this heart desire and plan of His.
People, do something. Say something. The system is perpetuated when those with privilege do nothing. I am a white, twenty-something, female from a Texas suburb… I may be a woman, I may be an artist, I may have no money… but I am white… and I am privileged because I don’t have to worry about the bodily safety of those that I love everyday simply because their skin shows. Name your privilege and name your power to be able to make or break this existing system of oppression and slaughter.
